Our Story

Betty & Dave

We are the sole owners of Diatribe Brewing! Dave is the Head Brewer and Betty will be doing the rest.

A LITTLE BACKGROUND: Betty and Dave first moved to West Asheville over a decade ago. Not long after they decided to give homesteading a shot, so they bought a log cabin out in the Spring Creek area of Hot Springs. After many years of maintaining 15 acres of land, growing a plethora of fruits and veggies, and dabbling in all kinds of fermentation, they fulfilled their goal of self-sufficiency and were ready for a new chapter.

Wanting to stay near friends and family, they were drawn back to West Asheville. One of their dreams has always been to have a small brewery. So when a brewery came up for sale just two miles down the road from them, they jumped at the opportunity and Diatribe Brewing was born!

FIRST HALF - BETTY: Betty is a Certified level ranked judge in the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) and a Certified Beer Server under the Cicerone program. She will be running the taproom and whipping up flavor combos for their hard seltzers.

She has also done much of the renovations to the space, with the help of many friends who have generously volunteered. You can ask her about the previous blood red bathrooms #Diatribe.

SECOND HALF - DAVE: Dave is our Head Brewer. He has brewed professionally in and around Asheville on a range of brewhouse sizes, from nano to production, with roles including Head Brewer and Lead Production Brewer. His brewing education includes coursework with the Siebel Institute of Technology, one of the country’s leading brewing schools, where he earned a full scholarship as a past winner of the Sam Adams Longshot Competition. While he is partial to European lagers, first and foremost he is driven by sensory analysis, and thus loves the challenge of brewing a wide range of styles. He has also dabbled in sake, fruit wines, hard seltzer, and cider. He is a Master level BJCP judge, a Great American Beer American Beer Festival Judge, and a Certified Cicerone. He is four for five in medaling on behalf of breweries where he was given the opportunity to enter beers, including most recently earning a gold for one of his IPAs in the country’s third largest competition.

Even after going professional, Dave continued to brew at home to test variables and ingredients, and he remains a proud member of the Mountain Ale & Lager Tasters (MALT), the local homebrew club, of which he has been a member for over a decade. Over the years, he has won hundreds of medals, including gold medals in 47 different styles of beer, as well as achieving Brewer of the Year in each the Southern and Midsouth competition circuits. Homebrewers in the greater Asheville region have won seven National Homebrew Competition (NHC) medals over the years, and Dave is honored to have brought home four of those. This includes two golds when NHC set records as the world’s largest beer competition. This also got him invited to compete in the commercial US Open competition, where thousands of entries come from breweries that range from Sierra Nevada and New Belgium to Westmalle and Ayinger, and his homebrews medaled both times.
